I wondered if I was doing the right thing. Then I decided it didn’t matter; I couldn’t make this any worse than it already was.
I had no idea how Georgia felt about last night. She hadn’t spoken much this morning, though she did thank me for dropping her home in the morning so she could get ready for work. I had considered sending a message, but I couldn’t find the words.
So, after stopping at the florist to pick up a small bouquet of lilies, I decided to come down to the bakery for my normal lunchtime treat. As I stood at the corner of the street, staring at the bright exterior of the bakery, however, I found it difficult to move my feet.
I didn’t know if Georgia would want to see me. What if we had ruined everything last night? I had finally gotten her to the point where she welcomed my company, but I could very well have taken two steps backward with what happened last night, especially since we weren’t ready for it. There was still too much between us.
But passion had gotten the better of us. I swallowed, remembering how she had allowed me to hold her as we slept last night. That may be the last time I would ever get to do so.
Stop being a coward, I chided myself. Just get in there and face whatever she throws at you.
Alright… I could do this.
I crossed the street and strode toward the bakery, squaring my shoulders. Thankfully, there was no one else there; Georgia was cleaning the tables, her eyes intent on a spot that seemed particularly hard to shift. I opened the door with a tinkle of a bell.
Georgia looked up as I entered, and I cleared my throat, holding out the flowers.
“Have you had a good day?” I asked gruffly.
Georgia’s eyes widened, darting from me to the flowers. And then, to my delight, she blushed and took them off my hands.
“It hasn’t been bad,” she said. She sniffed the flowers and laughed. “Where exactly am I meant to put these?”
I hadn’t thought of that. “I’m sure you can figure it out.”
Bemused, she shook her head. “Well, thank you, anyway, they’re lovely.”
So far, so good; I had made her blush and laugh, and she wasn’t demanding that I leave. In fact, she was being very friendly toward me.
“About last night…” I started.
“Don’t,” Georgia said, holding up a hand. “Just… don’t. I have a feeling you might be about to apologize, so… don’t, okay? I was an active participant in what happened and…” She shifted on the stop, looking a little awkward. “It was alright.”
Part of me wanted to joke and say “Just alright?” But it was the wrong moment. So I blurted out the next thing that came to mind.
“Would you like to use those tickets this weekend?”
She looked startled and then she smiled slightly, her eyes warm.
“Sure,” she agreed.
I grinned, feeling ridiculously happy. I hadn’t ruined everything. If anything, we had taken a larger step than I had intended, and we had found our footing despite it.
